There was a specific week where I became obsessed with a specific number.
Not revenue. Not clients. Followers.
I'd check it in the morning before I did anything else.
I'd post something and then refresh the page twenty minutes later to see if it had moved.
I'd look at accounts smaller than mine and feel fine and then look at accounts bigger than mine and feel behind,.
I'd do both of those things in the same sitting without recognising how exhausting that loop was.
The content I was making during that period reflected it.
I was chasing reach.
Writing things designed to travel wide rather than land deep.
Broad hooks, safe opinions, nothing that might alienate anyone because alienating people meant fewer followers and fewer followers meant losing the game I'd decided I was playing.
The irony is that it was the least effective period I'd had in a long time.
The numbers crept up slowly but nothing else did.
No new client conversations.
No interesting opportunities. No one sliding into my messages because something I said had stuck with them.
Just a slightly larger audience that felt, if I'm honest, like strangers watching through a window.
The shift came from a conversation I wasn't expecting.
Someone I'd been following for a while, a person with a fraction of my following at the time, mentioned offhand that he'd just signed two new ghostwriting clients from X that month.

I asked him how.
He said he'd stopped trying to grow and just started writing for the people already there.
I didn't fully understand what he meant until I tried it.
I wrote a post that week that I was genuinely nervous about.
It wasn't controversial exactly but it was specific.
It named something I actually believed about the way most people approach building on X and it wasn't the comfortable version of that opinion.
It was the true one. I almost softened it before posting and then didn't.
The reach was average.
But three people replied in a way that stopped me.
Not likes, actual replies with actual thoughts.

Followers are people who clicked a button once.

One of those things is a vanity metric.
The other one is the reason people pay you.
The accounts I've watched build real businesses from X, the ones with client waiting lists and inbound work and genuine options about who they take on, almost none of them have the largest audiences in their space.
What they have is a smaller group of people who read everything they post and feel something when they do.
Who forward their newsletters to friends.
Who think of them immediately when someone in their circle needs exactly what they offer.
You can't manufacture that by optimising for impressions.
It only comes from saying true things consistently over a long enough period that the right people start to feel like they know you.
